Welcome to Kindergarten!

Week of February 5, 2018

Tuesday, February 13th

This year since Ash Wednesday falls on February 14th, we will celebrate St. Valentine’s Day on Tuesday, February 13th. If your child would like to bring Valentines in for the class we ask that they bring enough for everyone. K-1 has 15 students and K-3 has 13 students. Also, please do not address the envelopes to individual students; this makes it easy to distribute. We will have a small low-key celebration in the classroom.

Wednesday, February 14th (Ash Wednesday)

We will be attending a prayer service in church and receiving ashes. This is our actual 100th day of school but we will wait a day for our celebration.

Thursday, February 15th

We will celebrate our 100 day milestone today. We will have ‘100 Theme’ activities throughout the day and are asking for your support. Please help your child decorate a hat with 100 of something on it (for example, a baseball cap with 100 stickers or a beach hat with 100 buttons). Be creative, have fun, but keep it simple. We’ll be parading around school showing off our creations.

Look for Sign-up Genius from your homeroom mom for opportunities to help us with these celebrations.

Thank you 100 times over,

Marie & Lori

November 15, 2017

Dear Parents,

We are headed into a busy and joyous time of year and we wanted to keep you up to date on life in kindergarten.

Religion:

This week we will be discussing the Liturgical Calendar. When we return from Thanksgiving weekend we will begin our exploration of Advent. We will learn about the three wise men, Balthasar of Arabia, Melchior of Persia, and Gaspar of India and their journey to reach the baby Jesus. Balthasar, Melchior, and Gaspar will be visiting the classroom similar to the way ‘The Elf on The Shelf” visits many of your homes. They will lead the children in learning about the story of the first Christmas that will include the Holy Family and our Christmas traditions.

Math:

We will continue to work on the concept of addition and the value of numbers into the teens. The centers will enhance learning with hands-on experiences using manipulatives. We will also use Christmas themes so that our learning reflects the season.

Language:

Even though our kindergarteners made it through “ABC Bootcamp” with flying colors, our letter sound work continues every day. We devote part of each day to practicing letter sounds, using letter sounds to form words and to decode words. We are also continuing to work on sight words and this week we will be sending home set three. Our stories during the month of December will reflect the season.

Reminders:

We are headed into colder weather and will continue to go outside everyday for recess. Please make sure your child comes to school with the proper outdoor clothing that is labeled with their name. Girls may wear sweatpants to keep their legs warm.

Thank you,

Lori and Marie

September 6, 2017

Dear Parents,

Just a few notes to help you ease into the school year:

  • Please pack a recess snack for your child each day. The information to order a daily pretzel will be coming out shortly. Also, please remember to pack a drink each day to have with lunch.
  • If you brought an “emergency snack” the night of the supply drop-off, we are returning it. Our school procedure has changed and it is no longer necessary.
  • Kindergarten boys are NOT required to wear a belt with their uniforms.
  • Your child will come home the first day with a blue ‘Take Home Folder’. This folder should travel back and forth with your child each day. It will be used for any communication between home and school.

  • SPECIALS:
    • Monday: Art and Music
    • Tuesday: Technology and Library
    • Wednesday: Gym (Gym uniforms to be worn on this day beginning Sept. 13th)

We are looking forward to an exciting school year!

Week of January 29

Dear Parents,

1. Don't forget tomorrow is a free Tag Day for students (no colors/theme).

2. I'm sending home a "Student Notebook" penmanship book for home. I'm using a different one in the classroom (and need some shelf room) so home they come for your penmanship practice pleasure:)

3. We are heading into February with a few exciting events on the horizon. Last week we read The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats. The children created beautiful winter scenes from the story and wrote a description of their illustration. Their work is on display in our hallway. We will be using Groundhog Day and the Super Bowl as opportunities to make predictions, graph information, and compare our predictions to actual results.

4. This week is Catholic Schools week. We had a great science assembly this morning - Grand Hank, the Scientist! Kindergarten will be doing a special STEM activity this Friday, February 2nd at 1:30 in the classroom. Please join us if you can.

5. Beginning the week of February 5th we will be having a “Star Student” of the week. On the Friday prior to their week we will send home a Star Student paper for your child to fill in with fun facts about themselves. We will also send home a piece of laminated 12’’ x 18” construction paper for your child to add photos and decorations. If you would like to send in a special treat during your child’s week, you are welcome to do so but it is not necessary. During their week, children may bring in a favorite picture book to read to the class or have an older sibling be a “guest reader” at a mutually convenient time for both grades. I will contact the teacher to make arrangements. Please see below for the Star Student schedule. If this schedule poses a problem for anyone, please let me know and we can rearrange.

Week of 1/22/18

Dear Parents,

Just a short update for the week--WOW, I think we'll finally have a normal week!
1. MATH: We started subtraction last week and will continue this week and next. You can work at home with them by asking them simple subtraction word problems emphasizing 'How many are left?" or "How many are ___?"
2. REL: We're continuing our chapter on families, which ties nicely into next week's Catholic School Week. We have a few school-wide activities planned, including a Science assembly funded by our Home & School. We are also asking any Kindergarten parents to join us on Friday, February 2 @ 1:30 in the Kindergarten rooms. If you can make it great, but please don't feel obligated. Mrs. Farren sent a note about this a week or so ago.
3. Sight Word List #6 will be coming home on Thursday. These were introduced today. These words are practiced everyday in school, but practice at home is necessary. They are doing great!
4. Reminder: Any papers/booklets coming home can be practice for reading. For example, the students did an ABC order page today--have them read the words; the religion booklet can also be read and sight words underlined/circled as practice.
There will be more to follow regarding Catholic Schools Week.
Thank you,
Lori

K-3 Week of 12/4:

Hi Everyone,

Well, this is one hectic month, but I'm looking forward to the excitement. A few notes for the week:
1.Santa's Secret Workshop on Monday. If you haven't already, please send in the envelope with a list of people for our big shopping day! It's like Cyber Monday all over again:)
2.Advent begins this Sunday. In order to help the children remember the real reason for the season, Kindergarten will be doing acts of kindness at home to help prepare their hearts for the big day! We hope you find some benefits to this activity:) You will find a baggie of paper strips in their folder on Monday. They are to try to do at least one good deed at home each day. They (or you) write the good deed on the strip and bring it back to school. We will attach it to a "Sharing God's Light" star the students made today. Please make sure your child's name is on the strips.
3.Scholastic Orders are due Thursday, December 7. The order will be placed December 8 or 9.
4. We will haveMass on Friday, December 8for the Immaculate Conception.
5.Booklet in folder. You will be seeing short 4-page story booklets in the folders. Please have children practice reading those for fluency. They can read them to you, a sibling, a pet, a stuffed animal - anything to get them started reading:)
6.Report Cardswill be distributed on Friday, December 8.
7.Reminder: no school on Monday, December 11.
Thank you and have a great weekend!!
Lori

November 27, 2017

Hi Everyone,

I hope you had a great Thanksgiving! Only a few more weeks and another break, but who's counting?!:) A few notes:
Today's Folder:
1.Santa's Secret Workshopinformation and envelope. This isn't until next Monday, but during this week, please help your child fill out the envelope and be ready for shopping next Monday, Dec. 4 @ 8:30 am.
2.Homework: Although I have always checked the HW, I will now be checking and returning it after it's marked. I just want the children to know that it matters - neatness, on time, accuracy, following directions.
3.Scholastic Order catalogs. Due date is December 7; orders will be placed on December 8.
Report Cardsare being distributed December 8. Some of the categories will haveNA, which means we are not presently assessing that skill. A '1'means that the student is beginning to develop the skill. I will focus on that skill with the student in small groups and/or have our MCIU specialist work with students. A '2' is the student is progressing satisfactorily. A '3' means the student can do that skill independently. If your child receives a '3' this trimester, there's no guarantee that it will remain consistent through the next two. The work will be more challenging as we move ahead.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to email me. Have a great evening!
Lori

November 2, 2017

Hi Everyone,

I would like to thank EVERYONE who made our Halloween Party such a great success this past Tuesday. I think the kids had a great time and it was certainly so nice to have such great parent participation! A special 'thank you' to Christy, Andrea, Colleen, and Jackie (our Homeroom Moms) who organized all the supplies and volunteers.
Also, I would like to thank you for signing up for conferences early. I know it is/was an inconvenience for those of you with multiple children in the school. It is so nice to sit and have a little one-on-one time with you.
Thank you again,
Lori

October 24, 2017

Dear Parents,

Important Reminders:

1. Bootcamp Finale is this Friday at 1:30pm in Father Fitzpatrick Hall! Your children will be coming home today with invitations. Please look for them in their folders. Grandparents and younger siblings are welcome to attend. Unfortunately, older siblings at St. Joseph the Protector cannot attend this event as it is during school hours.

2. Next Monday, October 30th, is Picture Day. Students come to school in their school uniform. Picture order forms were sent home last week; please return them to school by Monday.

3. As you know, Tuesday is Halloween. This is a regular school day. Students are to wear their uniforms (no costumes) but may add a touch of Halloween fun (socks, pin, hairband or ribbons for the girls). We will be having a party in the classroom that afternoon. Thank you to the parents who have volunteered their time or provided a treat. We are looking forward to a scary fun time!

4. A new list of sight words will be coming home on Thursday. Please continue to practice the old with the new each time a set is sent home. Thank you.

5. Wednesday, November 1st, is All Saints Day. This is a Holy Day and also a school day. We will be taking the students to Mass that morning. This is also the day that Winter uniforms begin.

6. A sign up for conferences will be coming this week. Unfortunately, I have been called for District Court jury duty on November 8 and 9 and will not be able to make conferences those days/evenings. I'm soooooo sorry for the inconvenience!

Hoping to see all of you this Friday!

Thank you,

Lori

1.Check folders tonight! In your child's folder is a letter w/attachments regarding the first list of sight words. We will be working on a total of 100 words through the end of the year. These are EXTREMELY important to practice at home and there are so many fun ways to do it!
2. We are starting to prepare for our ABC Bootcamp Finale scheduled for Friday, October 27. Your child picked out their letters today and an information note will be in your child's folder tomorrow with a list of each student's letter, along with a link to visit for ideas. You will need a brown paper shopping bag for the vest. Parents are invited to attend on the 27th at 1:45 in Father Fitzpatrick Hall. Don't panic - this is very simple and nothing to purchase:)))
3. Pizza Day is Thursday.
4. October Scholastic orders are due on Friday. The order will be placed on Sunday.
5. On Thursday we will have a special visit from the Weldon Fire Company just for Kindergarten for fire prevention month.
